Choosing the best seasonal foods or your summer season can be tricky! If you go to the grocery store, you will still see the same fruits and veggies out that you see at any other time of the year, so how can you tell which ones are in season, and which options are the best for keeping your summer nutrition goals?
TheActiveTimes.com wanted to know what superfoods can do these too, so they asked me if I would help sort it out for their readers before they hit the markets and stores, in search of the best healthy food for their tables and their diet this season.
“Superfoods are not a separate category, according to the American Heart Association. This is a marketing term used to describe foods that contain a huge amount of nutrients, few calories, little or no sugar and salt, fiber and other health boosters.
“Most definitions will describe them as being rich sources of antioxidants, which protect our body cells from damaging, thus preventing illnesses, and in nutrients lowering bad cholesterol and the risk of heart problems, cancer and other diseases.
Some foods have the power to improve mood, energy, metabolism and vision even when you consume them in small doses. Others are especially helpful in achieving weight loss goals during the summer.
The general rule to eat healthy and cheap is to buy fruits and vegetables that are in season. Luckily, there are plenty of options between July and September – from everyone’s favorite strawberries to the little known purple carrots. Fish is also a great go-to food but you have to be careful when and where you buy it.”
